Citizen Exchange

For adults interested in visiting our sister city, a delegation typically travels to Hanamaki each fall to take part in the Hanamaki Matsuri Festival, a celebration that dates back over 430 years.  There are also various opportunities to host and welcome visitors from Hanamaki each year.

2024 September Citizen Delegation

This fall, a delegation from Hot Springs had the privilege of visiting our sister city, Hanamaki, Japan. With a focus on cultural enrichment and educational connections, the 16-member group included two city department heads, prominent representatives from the educational sector, and committed supporters of the sister city program.

During the trip, the delegation was warmly received by Hanamaki officials and locals, marking 31 years of sister city friendship. The itinerary included opportunities to experience the culture and beauty of Hanamaki and celebrated the close connections shared with our sister city friends. A highlight was attending the Hanamaki Matsuri, known for its captivating parade of traditional dancers, mikoshi (portable shrines), and brilliantly lit floats. Delegates also joined in cultural experiences such as traditional tea ceremonies, gaining a firsthand appreciation for Japan’s deep-rooted traditions.

This year’s delegation focused on education, bringing together Dr. Wade Derden, President of National Park College; Adam Webb, Director of the Garland County Library; Dr. Dan Kostopolus, Director of Global Studies at Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts; and Fountain Lake School District’s Principal Frank Janaskie. These leaders explored future exchange programs, renewed the sister school connection, and discussed enriching opportunities for students and educators in both cities.

Looking ahead, we anticipate the chance to reciprocate the warmth shown to us by welcoming our Japanese counterparts in the coming months. This exchange has not only deepened our understanding of Japanese culture but also strengthened our invaluable connection with Hanamaki.
