Hanamaki Toy Museum Brings “Mokuiku” to Hot Springs with Interactive Wooden Toy Exhibit
Since opening in downtown Hanamaki in 2020, the Hanamaki Toy Museum has become a cherished destination for locals and a popular attraction for visitors, celebrating the artistry and precision of Japanese craftsmanship in traditional and innovative wooden toys. The museum promotes the concept of “Mokuiku”—an educational initiative encouraging the use of wood and trees to foster connection, understanding, and sustainable practices across generations. Mokuiku, literally translating to “educational activities involving wood and trees,” encourages people to engage with wood materials, promoting awareness of natural resources and environmental stewardship.
By offering interactive experiences with beautifully crafted wooden toys, the Hanamaki Toy Museum aims to share the values of Mokuiku with Hot Springs families—and, eventually, across the United States. This fall, Arkansas families can enjoy this unique experience firsthand through a 24×24-foot interactive exhibit, which will travel to three local venues: Mid-America Science Museum (October 30–November 3), Hot Springs Convention Center (November 6–10), and Garland County Library (November 13–17).
Entry to the exhibit is free; however, admission or membership is required for visitors to the Mid-America Science Museum.
Sister City Secret Screening October 19
In collaboration with the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, the Hot Springs Sister City Program is sponsoring a special Secret Screening on October 19 at 1:30 p.m. as a part of the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival. The film celebrates the essence of Japanese heritage and the art of transformation. Here’s how it works: purchase a ticket or bring your festival pass, sign a non-disclosure agreement at the door, and prepare to experience a story steeped in tradition and craftsmanship. This film beautifully captures the balance of honoring longstanding customs while stepping into a new vision for the future, reflecting Japan’s unique approach to blending history with innovation.
